T-Series is an Indian music record label and film production company. It was founded on July 11, 1983 by Gulshan Kumar, who was a music producer and cassette company owner at the time. T-Series started out as a cassette company, distributing pirated Bollywood songs, but later turned to producing original music and film content.
Gulshan Kumar, the founder of T-Series, faced his fair share of struggles on his path to success. He began his career as a fruit juice seller in Delhi and later entered the music industry as a cassette distributor for pirated Bollywood songs. Gulshan Kumar started a company called Super Cassette at the age of 23 in Noida. One by one they climbed the peak of success.
Despite legal troubles and stiff competition, he was able to grow his business by focusing on producing original music and creating a loyal customer base. He gave opportunities to singers like Sonu Nigam, Anuradha Paudwal, Kumar Sanu. He launched a company called T Series.
Now T-series a first YouTube channel to surpass 100 million subscribers. T-Series, the Indian music label and film production company, has achieved numerous milestones on its YouTube channel. In May 2019, T-Series became the first YouTube channel to surpass 100 million subscribers, making it the most-subscribed channel on the platform.
Gulshan Kumar was religious. He had faith in Gods like Vaishno Devi, Shani Dev, Amarnath, Sai Baba. That time Mumbai’s underworld was divided into few different groups.
There was a time when in 1992-93 he was recorded as the highest tax paying businessman because of Bollywood. On the other hand, Few gangster wanted to prove their supremacy.They’re looking for different options for money. For this, they’re trying to rule Bollywood. Ranjit Singh Sharma who was then head of crime branch made a list of possible people who could carry out the Salem attack and they were provided with police security. But Gulshan Kumar’s name was not in this list. Gulshan Kumar was missing from the police list. Here, Gulshan Kumar was getting threatening calls from underworld. But he was not begging these threats. He did not even file a complaint against these threats.
In a few days, some members got information that Gulshan Kumar’s security guard was not with him as he was ill. He decided to take advantage of this opportunity. On August 12, 1997, Gulshan Kumar went to Jiteshwar Mahadev Temple in Andheri as planned. As soon as Gulshan Kumar came out of the temple after having obeisance, heavy bullets were fired at him.
This thriller lasted about 15 to 20 minutes. After making sure that Gulshan Kumar was dead, the killer escaped from there. The motive behind the assassination was reportedly tied to a dispute between Gulshan Kumar and some members of the Mumbai underworld, who were seeking extortion money and a share of his music company’s profits.
The case was highly publicized and several individuals were arrested, tried, and convicted in connection with the murder. Bollywood got a shock after this incident.
After Gulshan Kumar’s death in 1997, his son Bhushan Kumar took over as the chairman and managing director of T-Series. Under his leadership, T-Series has become the largest music label in India and has expanded its operations to include film production and distribution. In recent years, T-Series has also gained global attention for its YouTube channel, which has become the most subscribed channel on the platform, surpassing the Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie in 2019.
